The Four Value Orientation
A newly promoted line manager became responsible for a team which historically has not performed well. She wanted to have a team workshop to review priorities and to engage with the team. The Four Value Orientation was used to discuss the challenges the team face, to discuss if they have the leadership approach it takes
to deliver on goals and to learn about each others’ style and preferences. The Four Value Orientation model was administered and the briefing allowed the team to understand their group profile.
The team was far too process oriented and not enough results oriented. The results also gave insights on each team members’ perferred approach and where these preferences clashed with and complimented other team members’ styles. At the conclusion oft he workshop participants had learned about different leadership styles, had applied the model in an exercise that brought out the differences and created more familiarity and therefore built trust amongst team members. Post workshop, the model was used by each leader to adapt their approach with their own diverse teams.
